I first learned about this documentary from Evan Courtney about a month ago. As soon as I had a chance, I rented it in iTunes because the trailer looked so interesting. My wife, was skeptical at first of a “documentary” staring a bunch of 80+ yr old seniors singing modern and classic rock songs but once the movie started we were both hooked. What an amazing, heartwarming and inspiring way to spend an evening!
So I was trying to explain to Brin this evening what theremin was and how it works and promised her a YouTube video to solidify my explanation. I never expected to come across this! I hand it to the guy from a patriotic standpoint but this is just too funny. I count, let me see… How many facial expressions? Oh yea: ONE! See if you can sit through all SIX MINUTES of this one! Each melody just gets funnier on this strange but wonderful instrument. If you still haven’t had enough you can catch his 35 minute concert or his many other videos and lessons!
Not sure why in the world Michael Jackson’s “P.Y.T.” (Pretty Young Thing) just popped into my head. But got me thinking…. We need current artists who aren’t afraid to use acronyms in their songs like MJ did. I mean really… What better “filler” lyrical content is there than using an acronym and immediately giving the definition afterward?
I Want To Love You (P.Y.T.)
Pretty Young Thing
You Need Some Lovin’ (T.L.C.)
Tender Lovin’ Care
And I’ll Take You There

So are there any other songs you can think of that use acronyms like this?
So how many songs can you listen to in two years? Apparently 100,000 according to my Last.fm profile. I joined on August 10th, 2006 and hit the 100K mark on July 22nd. Head over there to see complete stats but to summarize, here are the top 10 artists over the past two years.
Granted this is a snapshot of two years of ever evolving musical taste so this isn’t entirely accurate to-date. This list is also partially skewed to the fact that these artists have more albums/tracks than other artists in my iTunes library… But I still do like all of these bands.
If you’re already on Last.fm and haven’t added me as a friend do so now! The rest of you, what are you waiting for?
Vince just posted this saying this would be our new favorite video. For the moment I would have to agree (until the next dose of viral goodness makes it’s way down the pipe).
Somehow Adam Watts slipped by the radars but I’m glad that Vince posted this yesterday. I agree with his assessment that plenty of good Worship music has been produced the last few years but that hasn’t been the case with generic “christian / positive” genre. Watch this video and you’ll agree this guy is talented. Also, drummers take note of the drum solo towards the end, amazing.
Now granted I’m not saying that there is no good music coming out these days, I’m just saying there doesn’t seem to be as much lately. I’ll post an entry with some of my current favorites soon. Who are your current favorites?
Are you going to be picking up the new Third Day album in July? Looks like they will be mixing it up a little this time around. If you pre-order the album now you can stream it until the CD arrives.
This video made the apple blog rounds a couple days ago and the tune has been stuck in my head ever since. Is it just me or is this a really infectious melody? Yea, the thought that went into video is pretty impressive too.
