This morning around 10 AM Apple released version 2.0 firmware for the iPhone. So far, amazing! Here’s what I’ve installed so far…

  • Twitterrific – Nice app but not sure I’ll use it exclusively. I still love Hahlo.com.
  • Jott – This is a really nice app. I use the toll free Jott service all the time to send myself reminders. Having this app lets me record voice notes offline at any time and they are synced via WiFi or EDGE.
  • Remote – Not sure I’ll use this until I get an Apple TV but I tried it with iTunes and it’s really cool. Basically it lets you control iTunes or an Apple TV over wifi just like you would your TV remote. Really smooth.
  • WeatherBug – Takes the built in iPhone weather app to a new level.
  • Google – A one stop search that will search some of the iPhone as well as google’s index.
  • Evernote – I have yet to really get to using Evernote but the little I’ve messed around with the desktop app it is really nice. Now having an iPhone app that lets you type, take a snapshot or record a voice note this might be worth diving into now.
  • Super Monkey Ball – This is COOL! I had to get this app just to test the accelerometer. Up until today the only thing that used it was orienting apps (Safari and photo browser), so based on that I was skeptical on how sensitive it would be. Let me tell you it works, and it works well! Game is amazing. Definitely beats playing Tetris on a clamshell phone. :-)
  • Facebook – App version of web site, pretty lame lacking features of even iPhone web-based version.
  • eBay – App version of web site… Cool
  • MySpace – App version of web site.
  • Pandora – iPhone version of the online radio software
  • Shazam – What an awesome concept! Put your iPhone next to a speaker playing a song and it comes back with the Artist / Title of the song! Here are a few tries I just did.
    • Phil Whickam – NOT SUCCESSFUL
    • U2 – SUCCESSFUL (of course)
    • Paul Coleman Trio – SUCCESSFUL
    • David Crowder Band – SUCCESSFUL
    • Hillsong United – PARTIAL (one of five trys came back successful)
    • MuteMath – SUCCESSFUL
    • Sigur Ros – SUCCESSFUL
    • Switchfoot – SUCCESSFUL
    • Death Cab for Cutie – SUCCESSFUL
Am I going to upgrade to the iPhone 3G? Negative. There’s not enough new stuff that’s relevant to my locale to make it worth it (no 3G service and never use GPS). Not to mention the fact that ATT/Apple are penalizing upgrades by tacking on a huge fee to the regular cost. Hey, it’s not like we paid a subsidized price a year ago!?!? I can see if we paid a subsidized price along with a 2-year contract but we all paid the big bucks to have the technology and now they want to penalize upgrading? I’d be fine extending my contract another 2 years, I’m just not sure where the justification is on their part for this one.
